Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The Division of Materials Theory is known to have a world-class research environment in the first-principles computational research in materials science. In the Division, besides the usage of existing state-of-the-art computational codes, new methods and computational techniques are perpetually being developed.

The PhD student will employ first-principles theory based on density functional theory (DFT) to study the underlying mechanisms of the lithiation/delithiation processes in organic electrode materials, primarily intended for Li-ion and Na-ion batteries. The primary focus of the work will be the development of a novel high-throughput computational materials design (HCMD) approach to search for superior organic electrode materials. The work will be conducted in close collaboration with an experimental group at the Department of Chemistry – Ångström in a joint effort to develop a platform to design novel electrode materials for the next generation of sustainable batteries.

Qualifications: The applicant is expected to have a master degree in Physics, or equivalent. A background in methods based on density functional theory (DFT), along with their software implementations, is highly recommended. The candidate should have good communication skills, excellent grades and developed abilities in written and spoken English.

The PhD position covers a period of four years and may be extended by departmental duties at a level of at most 20 %. Further information can be found at http://www.teknat.uu.se

The application should include a brief description of research interests and past experience, a CV, copies of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of the Master thesis (or a draft thereof) and other relevant documents. The candidates are encouraged to provide letters of recommendation.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students and teaching assistants.

Starting date: 2018-04-01, temporary full-time position.
