Uppsala University, Department of Women's and Children's Health

Description of Subject Area: Reproductive Health is a subject area linked to the beginning of life and the domain of human reproduction from a life-cycle and gender perspective. The main subject area includes the normal processes and the deviations with respect to pregnancy, delivery and the neonatal period as well as the development of parenthood. In addition, new insights are gained and theories are developed regarding women’s reproductive health, sexuality and family planning as well as midwives’ work in promotion, prevention, care and treatment for the woman, child and family.

Duties: The position includes teaching within educational programs at the basic and advanced levels within reproductive health and entails administrative and organisational duties in conjunction with this. The position also includes research and clinical work as well as keeping abreast of developments within the subject area and society in general that are of importance to the work at the University.

Eligibility requirements: The eligibility requirements for employment as a professor are research as well as teaching experience (Higher Education Ordinance Ch 4 Sec 3). Under the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University (AO), it is a general eligibility requirement that teachers possess the personal qualities necessary to capably perform the duties of the position.

Research expertise
Research expertise should be demonstrated through independent research and through research activities of high international and national quality. The applicant should have demonstrated skills in planning, initiating and managing research projects, including the ability to secure competitive research grants, and well-documented aptitude in the supervision of Ph.D. students. The applicant’s contribution to the international and national scientific communities will be assessed based on quality and scope of research publications in the most relevant publication channels for the field.

Teaching expertise
Teaching expertise must be demonstrated through educational and teaching qualifications (see AO section 23). The applicant must also show well documented expertise in supervision at the first- and second-cycle levels. A prerequisite for educational expertise being deemed to exist is the completion of academic teacher training, relevant to the activities, comprising at least ten weeks, or equivalent knowledge. If there are special grounds for this, the academic teacher training may be carried out during the first two years of employment. The teacher training must include training in PhD supervision.

Unless there are special reasons otherwise, the applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish or English.

To be eligible for this position, the applicant must be a licensed midwife. The applicant must be a licensed midwife or have applied to the National Board of Health and Welfare for a Swedish midwife licence no later than the date of filing this application. The applicant must, however, have obtained a Swedish midwife license no later than the employment decision.

If an applicant who is offered employment also meets the Uppsala University Hospital’s requirements for employment, the applicant will be offered a position combined with a position as a midwife.

Assessment criteria: In the appointment of this professorship, ranking will be based primarily on research expertise and then on teaching expertise. A combined consideration of all assessment criteria, however, could result in an applicant deemed to be vastly superior in teaching expertise being ranked higher than a candidate with superior research expertise. Relevant clinical expertise is significant to the position and will be considered. Experience in research, education and work in low-income countries is a useful qualification.

Research expertise
When the research expertise of an applicant is assessed, the research quality is of prime importance, but also research qualifications in the area of reproductive health. The scope of the applicant’s research, in terms of both breadth and depth, is also essential to consider. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and third-cycle courses and study programmes, the ability to competitively acquire research funding, as well as a demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community will be considered. Also see Section 3 in Guidelines and assessment criteria for recruitment and promotion of teachers at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy (RB).

Teaching expertise
In assessing teaching expertise, teaching quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration will be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, and teaching and learning in higher education.

The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors both within and outside the university is also included in teaching expertise. Also see RB Section 4.

Clinical expertise
Clinical expertise is described in AO Section 25 as clinical work and clinical training as well as participation in clinical development work. Among other things, clinical development work involves efforts to improve or rationalise health care and medical care.

When the university appoints new teachers, the applicants selected are those who, following a qualitative total assessment of expertise and qualifications, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and enhance the relevant duties and contribute to a positive development of the department.

Other expertise: Management expertise and administrative expertise are significant to the position and will be afforded consideration. The ability to cooperate with the wider community (third-stream activities) as well as communicate research and development work will be considered.

Management expertise
Management expertise is demonstrated through the ability to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility and motivate and provide others with the tools needed to effectively achieve common goals.  The ability to coordinate the group and help create a sense of involvement, participation and job satisfaction, as well as the ability to deal with conflicts are further examples of demonstrated expertise. Also see RB Section 5.

Administrative experience
Under the Appointment Regulations, administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the ability to plan, organise and prioritise work in an efficient and task-related manner and through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Expertise also includes overall operational planning and the capacity to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner based on an awareness of goals and quality. Also see RB Section 5.

Collaboration expertise
According to RB Section 6, when assessing collaboration expertise, experience and expertise in education and outreach work, editing and other activities related to the exchange of knowledge between universities and the wider community, as well as experience of innovation and entrepreneurship will be considered.

The gender equality aspect will be applied if two applicants of different genders have equivalent or nearly equivalent qualifications after a qualitative overall assessment.

The applicant’s parental leave, part-time work due to caring for children or similar will be considered useful qualifying professional experience.
