PhD student position in the subject Electrical Engineering with specialization in Signal Processing at the Division of Signals and Systems, Department of Engineering Sciences, Ångström Laboratory

Background
In recent years, energy harvesting (EH) solutions have become an emerging paradigm for powering up future wireless sensing systems. Instead of completely relying on a fixed battery or power from the grid, sensors with energy harvesting capabilities can collect energy from the environment by means of, e.g., solar cells, thermic gradients, vibrations, or radio-frequency signals.  More than 16 billion devices are expected to be connected by 2022 and hence powering of these wireless sensor devices and providing energy autonomous systems is of primary concern. As such, energy harvesting constitutes a key enabling technology for Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) including smart homes and smart factories.

This position focuses on providing signal processing solutions for EH sensor networks.

The Signals and Systems Division has a well-established line of research in this area with good contacts to industry, e.g., Ericsson and ABB. Please, see http://www.signal.uu.se/ for further information.

Project Description
This position focuses on providing signal processing solutions for EH sensor networks. The application area will be  energy harvesting wireless sensor networks. Modern machine learning techniques will be an important ingredient of the work.  As a member of cross-disciplinary team, you will contribute to providing solutions for future energy harvesting wireless sensor networks. Your main responsibility will be to pursue your own doctoral studies. The PhD position is for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years, including departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching).

Requirements
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent with basic skills in signals and systems and signal processing and a will to learn about energy harvesting WSN. It is desirable but not necessary to have some background in wireless communications and/or automatic control. The successful applicant is expected to have a strong collaborative spirit and good communication skills in oral and written English.

Application
The application must include the following:

- CV including your relevant academic, professional, and other experience and knowledge.

- Copy of the degree certificate(s) and transcripts of grades with translations in English whenever the documents are not in Swedish or English.

- Cover letter describing yourself, your research interests and your experience relevant to this position (maximum 2 pages).

- Publications or technical reports (if applicable): Up to 2 documents, no longer than 8 pages each. You can also submit a report you have written in connection with your education.  For longer documents such as, e.g., a Master thesis, please provide a summary (abstract) and a web link to the full text.

- Contact information for at least two referees.
