Institutionen för organismbiologi

The Department of Organismal Biology at Uppsala University is internationally renowned for its education and research on topics ranging from developmental biology, systematics, evolution, and physiology. With over 100 researchers and five research programmes (or subdepartments) our interests are wide-reaching, and incorporate a range of collaborative efforts with an engaging educational environment. The Subdepartment of Evolution and Development specifically focuses on the study of vertebrate form and function, evolutionary dynamics, and the mechanisms for changing diversity over time. For more information, see www.iob.uu.se.

The Subdepartment of Evolution and Development now seeks a Postdoctoral researcher to study the anatomy of acanthothoracid placoderms, with special emphasis on their dentition.

Duties: To investigate the anatomy, especially the dentition, of acanthothoracid placoderms - a group of extinct armoured fishes from the Early Devonian period (419 to 393 million years ago). The research will be based principally on microtomographic scans of acanthothoracids from the Prague Basin of the Czech Republic. Specific duties will include reconstructing the anatomy, especially of the head and jaws, from microtomographic data; analysing the phylogenetic relationships of acanthothoracids on the basis of these interpretations, and presenting the conclusions in scientific papers targeted to peer-reviewed journals.

Requirements: To be eligible for the position the applicant must have a PhD degree or equivalent in paleontology and have completed the degree within three years before the application deadline. In special circumstances the PhD can have been completed earlier, including leave of absence due to sickness, parental leave etc.

Applicants must have research experience with early vertebrates, especially acanthoracids and/or other placoderms. Experience of reconstructing fossil morphologies from tomographic scan data. Fluent command of English.

A general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must possess the personal capabilities necessary to carry out fully the duties of the appointment. Greater emphasis will be placed on the quality of individual scientific publications than on the number of publications.
