The department has an active, integrated research culture with expertise in a series of cross-cutting themes that include the archaeology of cult; urban societies; war, conflict and force; historical ecology; and critical heritage studies. These collections represent a major pedagogical asset as well as provide challenging research opportunities for scholars. In addition to archaeology and the study of material culture, staff members in the subject carry out extensive Egyptological philological and linguistic research on written material spanning the entire length of Egyptian language history from earliest times to the Coptic period.
